This is perhaps one of the earliest production “Duane Eddy” Signature models to exist, simply called a “Jr”. This is one very rare & cool guitar, originally called the S-300 model in 1960, that Duane personally preferred but never made it into its 1960-1 catalogues. This one is a very early model. Before it was known as the DE400 it was titled the ‘Duane Eddy Jr’. The very 1st production “Jr.” had the same Sunburst finish as this one bearing serial # 22163 (from pg. 85 in The Guild Guitar Book by Hans Moust), We spoke with Hans Moust, when we acquired this one & he says that he had heard about this one bearing the ser # 23414 from a former owner not too long after his book was published in 1995. Since then he located a little over a dozen Duane Eddy Jr. models, but all the later ones that he saw, had the regular ‘Duane Eddy – 400’ designation.

Besides the serial number, It is also (Blue) ink stamped inside the upper bout of the body, towards the centre block with the numbers 11/1962, meaning that the body was made in November 1962 with the final completion date being very early 1963.

This is a beautiful guitar, it’s lovely, vibrant Sunburst finish looks really spectacular. The 3-piece mahogany neck is arrow straight & feels perfect, sporting a very comfortable 60’s slim taper feel, while the 2 White D’Armond pickups are full of Duane’s classic “Rockabilly” tones. She has a beautiful bound & colorful Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard with contrasting white abalone block pearl inlays. She has all nickel plated parts and her original engraved Kolb tuners sport Diamond shaped pearl buttons, the original black pickguard & truss rod cover sports Duane’s signature. The Guild made Bigsby vibrato & metal bridge are pure Duane Eddy & function 100% perfectly. Her early gold chassis/silver topped & decal’d knobs complete the look, she really does ooze mojo & looks very, very cool. She is 100% original & very clean. There is some age related playwear marks around the body & back & her frets would poss benefit from a stoning, but there is no buzzing or dead spots whatsoever & the action is set very low at this time. She sleeps in her original Brown Tolex Case, which in itself tells the tale of her worldly travels!

This guitar has been round the world and if she could speak, then she would have tales of gigs with people like Hendrix, George Jones, Don Gibson, Johnny Cash and many more, as the original owner lived in Vietnam during the war and played the American bases. They also played throughout the rest of the world throughout the 60’s. Please see the pics showing the previous & original owner holding this beauty!
