The ‘Living Jewels’ series guitars launched Taylor’s Gallery series in the winter of 1999. The concept for the GSST came about by accident, when a staffer in Taylor’s design shop happened to wear a sea turtle pendant to work one day. The staffer commented that a similar design would make a cool inlay. Pete Davies, Jr., who designed the koi fish inlay, overheard the comment, and promptly began working on a sea turtle and then Whales designs. A few hours later, everyone agreed that they were inspired pieces of work.
(Pete Davies Jr. sadly passed away in 2015)
These are not only stunningly beautiful and collectible guitars, but the playability and tone is incredible!
The “Gray Whale” guitar (GSGW) is the third entry in the Gallery Series of limited edition Taylor guitars. The Gallery Series guitars were designed to be stunning works of visual art, as well as fine instruments. The first in this series was the Living Jewels model (GSLJ), or “Koi guitar”, a blue maple Dreadnought with an inlay of Japanese carp swimming down the fretboard and encircling the soundhole. The second Gallery Series instrument was the “Sea Turtle” (GSST), on which turtles depicted in paua rim and an intricately carved jellyfish of abalone shell float on the fretboard and back of a maple Grand Concert guitar. This model is a Grand Concert guitar that has strikingly figured Ziricote, as well as a premium-grade Engelmann spruce top. A luminous fingerboard inlay portrays two majestic gray whales & their calf, gliding through subtle, purplish rays of underwater light. The inlaid laser-cut rosewood and mahogany rosette depicts knotted nautical rope coiled around its perimeter and a tall sailing ship drifting into the soundhole. Each Gallery Series model can be identified by a special, numbered soundhole sticker signed by Bob Taylor.
This particular guitar is #61 of 100 & is perfect in every way. Zero scratches, zero issues, beautifully playability, with a tone to die for. She is also fitted with the LR Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone, which is a true innovation in acoustic reproduction technology.
