*Part Exchange Always Welcome*

Here we have a really lovely 1972 Les Paul Custom & OHC from the Norlin era. Has the ‘Volute’ headstock & Gibson embossed pick up covers – which together with the dates on the pots, dates her to approx August 1972.

This baby has the rare Crossbanded body (or “Multipiece” construction) sometimes incorrectly referred as “Pancake body“.

Crossbanding:

Les Paul designs were altered and a reinforced upper neck volute to decrease headstock breaks was added. Neck woods were changed from one-piece mahogany to a three-piece maple design. The body was also changed from one-piece mahogany with a maple top to multiple slabs of mahogany with multiple pieced maple tops. This is referred to as “multipiece” construction, and sometimes incorrectly referred to as a “pancake” body. The expression “pancake body” actually refers to a body made of a thin layer of maple sandwiched between two slabs of mahogany, with a maple cap. The grain of the maple was placed at 90 degrees to that of the mahogany. The “pancake”-like layers are clearly visible when looking at the edge of the guitar. This process is also known as “crossbanding“, and was done for strength and resistance to cupping/warping. Crossbanding was used on Les Pauls between 1969 and 1973 & totally phased out by 1977.

This model was known as the ‘Fretless Wonder’ The frets are very low & will likely have been stoned over the years. This allows for a very low & fast action, however, it may benefit from re-fretting somewhere down the line!

All hardware & electrics are original & the overall condition is very good & the gold plating is now showing it’s age & as you would imagine there are a few dings and marks as shown in the photo’s. However, there has been no neck break and has that great aged look through honest playing. The case is in good condition, with just one catch broken, but still closes perfectly.

This is an all original Les Paul Custom & case made in the USA and a great investment for the future and it even has the original owners manual.

This is already a 45+ year old guitar and will only rise in value.
